      MEDIA ADVISORY

Pombo, Crapo, Chafee and Walden to address Endangered Species Act

Washington DC- House Resources Committee Chairman Richard W. Pombo and Rep. Greg Walden will join Senators Mike Crapo and Lincoln Chaffee Thursday in a press conference to discuss a new, coordinated House-Senate approach to improve and update the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

The conference will be held Tomorrow, Thursday, February 10th at 12 noon in the Senate Radio and Television Gallery, room S-325 in the U.S. Capitol.

Signed into law more than thirty years ago by President Nixon, the Endangered Species Act was intended to conserve species identified as endangered and recover them to healthy populations. In the last three decades, however, the Act has only recovered 10 of its nearly 1300 listed species, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). This is less than a one percent rate of success for species recovery. The attendees of the press conference will discuss the bipartisan, bi-cameral efforts underway to update this law and strengthen its results for species recovery in the 21st century.
