52 New Casino Applications – Look To See If One Is Near You

Here is a list of tribes that have applications pending for new off-reservation casinos. There are a total of 52 with the information we have now. 24 applications were filed after the passage of the McCain Reservation Shopping bill (S 2078) out of committee on March 29th. That bill gave a prospective deadline of April 15th for all new casino applications.

Senator John McCain (R-AZ), Chairman of the Indian Affairs Committee, promised that if there was a large increase in applications after March 29th he would reset the deadline to March 29th.

The new applications for off-reservation casinos nearly doubled between March 29th and April 15th, obviously meeting Senator McCain’s criteria.

It is critical that all allies contact Senator McCain and ask him to honor his promise and close out all applications received by the Interior Department during the two weeks between March 29th and April 15th. The 24 we know about may not even be complete. There may well be more.

If you fail to call, there will be a flood of giant new tribal casinos across the country. Perhaps in your neighborhood.

Action Items:

-----1. Call, fax and e-mail Senator John McCain at the Senate Indian Affairs Committee. Ask him to honor his promise to move back the grandfather language to March 29th. Also tell him you are opposed to ANY grandfather language in S 2078, the Senate Reservation Shopping bill. It will come to a vote in the Senate soon. Call (202) 224-2251. You can send a fax to (202) 228-2862. E-mail: john_mccain@mccain.senate.gov. There is an underscore between John and McCain. The Committee website is http://indian.senate.gov/

-----2. Call, fax and e-mail your Senator to urge him to oppose the grandfather language that will help giant speculators along with many of the tribes below build new casinos, perhaps in your community. All grandfather language must be stripped from S 2078. Ask your Senator if he will sponsor or co-sponsor an amendment to remove all grandfather language.

-----3. Call your Congressman to urge him or her to ask House Resources Committee Chairman Richard Pombo to hold more hearings on Reservation Shopping. Make sure he opposes any grandfather amendment to the House Reservation Shopping Bill, HR 4893. Any Congressman may be called at (202) 225-3121.

Your Congressman must hear from you and your friends that you oppose adding a grandfather clause to the new Pombo bill, HR 4893, by amendment. Many speculators and tribes could get their casinos grandfathered if the grandfather clause is added to HR 4893. It is expected that several members of the Resources Committee will attempt to add a grandfather clause by amendment when the Committee votes on this issue in the next few weeks.
